What Crude Protein on a Cat Food Label Actually Tells You

The guaranteed analysis is four numbers measured badly. Here is how to convert them, what a cat needs that a dog does not, and which line matters more.

Two cat foods sit on a shelf. One is a canned pate guaranteeing 10 percent crude protein. The other is a kibble guaranteeing 34 percent. Most shoppers read that as the kibble having three times the protein, and most shoppers are wrong by roughly the whole margin.

The guaranteed analysis is the most-read and least-understood panel on a pet food label. It is four numbers, all of them measured on an as-fed basis, two of them minimums and two of them maximums, and one of them not measured directly at all. Learning what each one is actually reporting takes a few minutes, and it changes which foods look good.

Convert to dry matter or do not compare at all

Every figure in the guaranteed analysis includes the water in the food. A canned food is typically 75 to 80 percent water. A kibble is around 10 percent. Comparing them as printed is comparing a diluted sample to a concentrated one.

The correction is one division. Subtract the moisture percentage from 100 to get the dry matter percentage, then divide each nutrient figure by that fraction.

Take the two foods above. The canned pate at 78 percent moisture has 22 percent dry matter, so its protein is 10 divided by 0.22, or about 45 percent on a dry matter basis. The kibble at 10 percent moisture has 90 percent dry matter, so 34 divided by 0.90 is about 38 percent. The canned food is the higher-protein product by a clear margin, and the label said the opposite.

The same conversion applies to fat and fibre, and it applies whenever you compare any two products of different moisture content. It is the single most useful arithmetic operation in pet food shopping, and almost nobody does it. It is also what settles most of the wet versus dry argument on the protein point.

Why "crude" is a warning label

Crude protein is not measured by finding protein. It is measured by finding nitrogen and multiplying by a fixed conversion factor, on the assumption that protein is a roughly constant proportion nitrogen.

That assumption holds well enough for honest formulations and fails completely as a quality measure, because nitrogen from a highly digestible animal protein and nitrogen from a poorly digestible plant fraction score identically. A food can meet its guarantee while delivering considerably less usable protein to the cat than the number implies. The 2007 melamine contamination episode was the extreme demonstration of the same weakness: melamine is nitrogen-rich and inflates a crude protein reading without being protein at all.

Crude fibre has a related problem. It captures insoluble fibre reasonably and misses much of the soluble fraction, so it understates total dietary fibre in most foods.

None of this makes the panel useless. It makes it a screening tool rather than a ranking. Use it to check a food is in the right region and to compare within a format, then stop.

What a cat needs that a dog does not

Cats are obligate carnivores in a specific, biochemical sense rather than a rhetorical one. Several metabolic shortcuts that omnivores keep have been lost, and the consequences are dietary requirements a dog simply does not have.

Taurine. Cats cannot synthesise enough taurine and must get it from the diet. Deficiency causes dilated cardiomyopathy and central retinal degeneration, both of which were common in cats before the requirement was understood in the 1980s. AAFCO's cat food nutrient profiles set different minimums by format: 0.10 percent of dry matter for extruded dry food, 0.20 percent for canned. The canned figure is higher because wet processing and the higher heat load cost more taurine, so the formulation has to start with more. A food meeting the profile for its format is covered, which is why the adequacy statement matters more than the taurine number itself.

Arginine. Cats have almost no capacity to compensate for a shortfall. A single arginine-deficient meal can produce hyperammonaemia within hours. This is the reason a cat must never be fed a dog food for any length of time, and the reason home-prepared diets for cats are genuinely risky without a veterinary nutritionist involved.

Preformed vitamin A. Cats cannot convert beta-carotene from plants into retinol at a useful rate, so vitamin A has to arrive already made, from animal tissue or supplementation.

Arachidonic acid. Limited desaturase activity means cats cannot make enough from plant-derived linoleic acid, so this fatty acid is also an essential dietary nutrient for them.

Niacin. Cats cannot manufacture meaningful amounts from tryptophan the way many species can, so the dietary requirement is absolute.

Higher baseline protein. A cat's liver runs protein-catabolising enzymes at a high rate that does not fully downshift when dietary protein falls, so obligatory nitrogen losses stay high. AAFCO's minimum crude protein for adult feline maintenance is 26 percent of dry matter, against 18 percent for an adult dog. For growth and reproduction the feline minimum rises to 30 percent.

Those numbers are floors set for population adequacy, not targets. Most decent commercial cat foods sit well above 26 percent on a dry matter basis, and a food scraping the minimum is telling you something about its formulation priorities.

The line that outranks all four numbers

The guaranteed analysis is not where a label proves anything. That is the nutritional adequacy statement, usually the smallest type on the package, and it reads in one of two forms.

Formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for [life stage].

Animal feeding tests using AAFCO procedures substantiate that [product] provides complete and balanced nutrition for [life stage].

The first says the recipe was checked against a table. The second says cats ate it under a protocol and were monitored. Both are real. The trial is the stronger evidence, because it demonstrates the nutrients were available to the animal rather than merely present in the analysis, and taurine is precisely the nutrient where availability and presence come apart.

Check the life stage too. Maintenance is for adult cats. Growth or all life stages covers kittens, and an all-life-stages food is richer than most neutered adult cats at rest need. The full anatomy of the statement works the same way on the dog side of the label.

The other phrase to find is the one that disqualifies a product as a meal: for intermittent or supplemental feeding only. That is the correct label for treats, toppers and broths, and it appears on a surprising number of fresh and raw products sold in meal-sized portions.

Ingredients, ash and the things that do not matter as much as claimed

The ingredient list is ordered by pre-cooking weight, so fresh chicken at roughly seventy percent water outranks chicken meal on the page while contributing less actual protein once cooked. Splitting one ingredient into several fractions, so that pea protein, pea fibre and pea starch each land lower on the list than they would combined, is a legal formulation choice and a common one. The list tells you what is in the food. It ranks nothing.

Ash is not an additive and not a filler. It is the mineral residue left after combustion in the laboratory, and it appears on a label because bone and mineral supplementation both raise it. High ash was blamed for struvite crystals for years. Current thinking puts far more weight on urine pH and on urine concentration than on total ash, which returns the conversation to water intake.

By-products have a poor reputation and a legal definition that includes organ tissue. Liver, kidney and heart are nutrient-dense and are exactly what a cat eats first in prey. A named by-product meal from a manufacturer with real quality control is not a downgrade from muscle meat.

How to read a can or a bag in two minutes

Find the adequacy statement and confirm it says complete and balanced for the right life stage. Prefer feeding-trial substantiation where you have the choice. Note the moisture percentage, divide the protein guarantee by the dry matter fraction, and compare that figure across products rather than the printed one. Check the calorie content statement, which is required on all cat food labels and expressed per kilogram and per familiar unit, because that is the number that governs portions. Only then look at the ingredient list, and look at it for what it contains rather than for the order it is in.

Questions people actually ask

Is higher protein always better for a cat?

Up to a point, and the point varies. Adult maintenance requires at least 26 percent of dry matter, and most good foods run well above it. Cats with kidney or liver disease may need protein controlled rather than maximised, which is a decision for the treating vet rather than a label-reading exercise.

Do I need to check taurine on the label?

Not if the food carries a complete and balanced adequacy statement for the right life stage, because the AAFCO profile it was checked against includes taurine minimums of 0.10 percent of dry matter for dry food and 0.20 percent for canned. Home-prepared diets are the case where taurine needs deliberate attention.

Can I feed my cat dog food in a pinch?

For one accidental meal, no harm is likely. As a diet, no. Dog food is not formulated for feline taurine, arachidonic acid, preformed vitamin A or arginine requirements, and arginine deficiency in particular can cause harm quickly.

Is ash in cat food bad?

Ash is just the mineral content measured by burning a sample. It is not an ingredient. Its historic link to urinary crystals has largely given way to a focus on urine pH and how dilute the urine is, which is mostly a water intake question.

Are by-products a sign of cheap food?

Not on their own. The category includes organ meats that are more nutrient-dense than muscle. What matters is whether the source is named and whether the manufacturer can describe its quality control, not whether the word appears.
